Ferried from Manston to Hurn.
Contribution from Ian Gurney: "I was a BA copilot on 707s and a man called Mike Davis phoned me up one day and asked if I would get a crew together and take SU-FAB from Manston to Bournemouth, Hurn. When I asked who the skipper should be he said 'You'! Thus I flew my first heavy command with copilot Sam Small and engineer Brian Morgan. The aircraft had been at Manston for some time. It was still in pax config and the interior was a complete mess with white aluminium oxide powder coming out from between the tuning knobs of the VHF radios. The cabin stank and the seats were covered in a green mold. Luckily it was a cold clear day with excellent visibility. When we took off, the gear wouldn't come up. Only one comm radio worked, no nav aids worked and the nav kit, a Loran C I think, didn't work either (we later discovered most of its boxes had been pinched from the lower 41). So we eye-balled our way along the south coast. The strong northerly and light weight made me land on the 1800m northerly runway at Hurn. When we got on the ground, the nose wheel steering was almost immoveable. We departed Manston R/W 09 at 1425Z and arrived Hurn R/W 35 at 1515Z. Quite a first flight for me! Mike Davis owned Air Crew Leasing and he was buying old 707s and flying them to Davis Monthan for the Boeing Military Co who were using the tail feathers and engineers panel etc., to mod KC-135s to take the larger fan engines."
