Royal
Air Force Comet XR398 adorns the western apron on 12 October 1967. The
aircraft at right is an Ansett-ANA Carvair freighter. The hangar at
left is the Bell Helicopter Service Centre which was erected circa 1967
on the western boundary of Eagle Farm aerodrome. This necessitated the
construction of the appropriately named Boundary Avenue which ran from
Terminal Drive parallel with the Doomben Racecourse fence. The tower
behind the Bell Helicopter hangar is on private land and has no aviation
connection whatsoever. It was erected in the thirties when race clubs
banned commercial radio broadcasts of race meetings in the belief that
attendances at the track would be affected. Similar towers were erected
at several Australian racecourses to facilitate "illegal"
broadcasts from outside the track!
