NOTES
1
This schedule is included in correspondence sourced by Mick Raftery from Queensland State Archives. The road trip itinerary was attached to a letter sent by Lord Mayor Groom, as Chairman of the Memorial Appeal, to Mr. T. Harold, Queensland Commissioner of Police on 01OCT57. The letter outlines the Southern Cross trip and requests a police escort from the NSW border. It is believed that the schedule was prepared by DCA's Harold Affleck who departed Sydney on Monday 05AUG57 on a reconnaissance of the route. The only hand amendment to the source document is a correction to a typographical error in the date of the first arrival at Archerfield. As with all published schedules it would have been subject to change although the last four legs evidently made provision for schedule recovery. The subsequent Queensland Police report (Note 5) indicates that the convoy was on schedule when it reached the NSW/Qld border and indeed the aircraft arrived at its final destination ahead of schedule.
2
RON = Remain Over Night. The aircraft was available for viewing on the trucks at all intermediate stops.
3
Assembled = Aircraft was assembled for public inspection over a weekend.
4
The original schedule shows the aircraft overnighting at Ipswich but the subsequent Police report states that the aircraft was assembled. Clearly there was adequate time for this.
5
The Queensland Police motor cycle escort was provided by Sergeant 2/C H.J. Dallinger, Constable 1/C R.L. Tully and Constable 1/C J.W.A. Preston. Sergeant Dallinger submitted his report to the District Superintendent of Traffic, Brisbane on 28OCT57. The report states that the Queensland Police took-over escort duty from the NSW Police at the border town of Wallangarra at 0945 on 10OCT57 as scheduled. The report confirms that the task operated in accordance with the schedule from Wallangarra to Ipswich. The leg from Ipswich to Archerfield departed early at 0630 and arrived at Archerfield ahead of schedule at 0735. Immediately after arrival at Archerfield on 20OCT57 the aircraft was assembled and formally received by the City of Brisbane at a function that afternoon. (The early departure from Ipswich clearly anticipated this tight schedule.) The Police report concludes that there were "no untoward incidents" and that "from a traffic view point every thing passed off satisfactorily".
6
It is not known when the aircraft was moved from Centenary Place, Brisbane to Archerfield but the subsequent Police report states that the aircraft was still located at Centenary Place on 28OCT57. It is known that the aircraft was inspected at Centenary Place by personnel from 3AD on 29OCT57. It is considered likely that the aircraft was dismantled and transported to Archerfield for restoration on 29OCT57.
