Smithy at Curtiss-Reynolds Airfield in Glenview, Illinois (about 21 miles north-west of downtown Chicago) on 2 July 1930 during the final stages of the round-world flight by the Southern Cross which had crossed the Atlantic from east to west on 24 June 1930. With Smithy on this flight (but not in the photo) were Paddy Saul, Evert van Dijk and John Stannage.
