I was really happy to have found the information and photos of PG Taylor. He writes with such a wonderful and thoughtful style. The next time I come to Austrailia I would like to visit Mascot or some modern incarnation. I live not too far from Oakland California so I have been the ending terminus of his flight. I can imagine that from his writing that he was a sensitive and decent man and would have made better any lives that he touched. I am sorry that he is someone that I will never get to know. Thankyou thankyou for the really nice website. (Was in Austrialia in 1983 and want to come back still...)

Have recorded several thousand hours in the USAF C-47 out of Berlin when the Wall was being erected in 1961-1964, and the EC-47 out of Saigon in 1967-1968. James C. Wheeler has developed a most interesting and thorough documentation of the once classified mission of the EC-47 in Vietnam. You may find it interesting to visit the EC-47 History Site at www.ec47.com. The EC/C-47/DC-3 was a grand lady with whom I have shared many experiences.

What a nice surprise to find so much Lockheed (Burbank era) information. Strange, but I can't find a stitch of history here in Burbank and you folks seem so very interested in remembering and preserving our shared past. Thank you.
Burbank, the home of Lockheed and the Lockheed Skunk Works, has only one aircraft, an F-104, on display and none of the factory buildings were saved and no land is dedicated to the memory of the men and women who did the work. What a shame. Your site is wonderful. Thanks again.

Exellent site and goldmine of information !
Electra’s ( 10 L10A and 10 L14H )were used here in Poland by LOT Polish Airlines from 1936 and 1938. One L14(SP-LMK)have flown across Atlantic in May 1938 on the route Los Angeles-Buenos Aires-Natal-Dakar-Warsaw . Unfortunately all Polish Electras were lost during II World War (except five crashed before war and two sold to BOAC ).
Actually I'm gathering informations about Electras . If You are interested about Polish Lockheeds - let me know.

An excellent website that brought back many memories.
I lived for two years in Wynnum back in 1972/73 when I was about 10 years old and the seeds of a lifelong passion for civil aviation were sown there as I sat each day with binoculars watching the TAA and Ansett DC-9s, 727s, and the F-27s as well as the weekly BOAC VC-10, Qantas 707 and Air NZ DC-8-50 flights fly low on their way in to Eagle Farm. I was also at the airport on the day in June 73 when Air Pacific first arrived with their first One-Eleven flight.
On my way back to Ireland I made my first ever flight - Heathrow to Belfast in Trident 1C G-ARPO on 17 December 1973, seventy years to the day after the Wright Brothers made man's first - definitely an omen!
Now I have many flights and types on the log, I am Editor of 'Ulster Air Mail', Northern Ireland's only aviation magazine and I serve on the Committee of the Ulster Aviation Society. We also run an aviation museum and have in the collection a Wildcat, a Buccaneer, a DH Vampire, a Sea Hawk, Shorts Tucano and the 2nd prototype Shorts 330 G-BDBS, as well as quite a few other aircraft.
Many thanks for a look again at 'Brisbane's aviation' that thirty years ago sparked off a passion for aircraft in myself that still lives today and will continue to do so.

Gary Adams.

I flew from Moruya to Sydney as a teenager at about the end of December circa 1965 in ANR. It was my first flight, and the greatest adventure!
I'd love to get hold of the logbook info to pin the date down: I tried a few years ago, and got some info from Pollock's in Moruya. They were the booking agents.
The flight was out of the ordinary in that the normal route was Sydney/Merimblua/Moruya/Sydney. That day there was a "low ceiling" at Merimbula, so ANR called at Moruya first. This meant that I got an extra landing and takeoff in and out of Merimbula.......a real bonus!
After that I used to visit ANR at Mascot with my schoolfriends. Those were the days when you could walk into a hangar, and the engineers would instal you in the cockpit, stick a pair of headphones on you and turn on the radio so you could listen to the action. I don't think that happens any more.......
Subsequently I saw ANR a few times at Camden, slowly deteriorating. I'm glad she's being looked after.
Keep up the good work, and congratulations on a great site.
BTW, I have an in flight photo of ANR in Butler livery. It is a copy of one that was for years in the Monarch Hotel in Moruya, and ended up in the Moruya aero club, which was in fact the original corrugated iron terminal from which I departed circa 1965.

I am good friends with many Adastra oldtimers (including ex ops mngr Mike Wood and chief pilot Ted McKenzie) and Tom Watson (ex AirAg boss) who had early Hudson connections in PNG. A question ? VH SMM when it was in Sepal - do you have any knowledge as what it did?? Max Garroway, who was chief pilot for Sepal at the time wrote the manual for Sepal (Morrie Lawrence) BUT he resigned to join Adastra . What work did this Hudson do when under Sepal/World Wide control ?? Question 2: Sepal also had 2 mosquitoes and a lone Anson - do you know the registration for the Anson ?? I need to know. Anyway - nice to make contact. regards doug morrison

Thank you for what must be an enormous amount of effort in making this site.
As I'm modelling an L-749 Connie in the early scheme, I'm after some finer info on the colours and markings. Most of it I can make out, or make reasonable assumptions. However. I can't make out the colour of the cheat line (assumed to be a royal blue, or perhaps Consolidated Blue?)and info on the logo carried on the outboard fins, (looks like a flag in a circle).
Any help much appreciated.
Thank you again,
Roy

What a GOLDMINE of information this web site has been! At the end of Feb. 1942 my father(a KNILM Captain)and mother & I(10 years old) evacuated from the Dutch East Indies in PK-ALW(VH-ANR)to Broome.(missed the raid by a few days) Your "constellation" site linked me to "the Constellation Association". Lo and behold, they are restoring the same "Connie"(AF54-4062 or N105CF) I made my last landing in as an USAF pilot in 1976. I retired from the USAF shortly after that with almost 5000 hours in "Connies". Thank you for a GREAT web site!

Here is a challenge for the Smithy/Altair wonderers out there. Ian Mackersey in his book SMITHY makes a good case for the starboard undercarriage being bodily ripped off WHILE RETRACTED simply from contact with the sea. I can provide anyone serious enough to tackle this with everything they need to know about the details of this assembly, including the original stress analysis. There are wonderful stress modeling and finite element analysis programs now in common use - would it not be nice to speculate on what sort of terminal velocity / impact angle would be capable of such amazing destruction of a protected assembly.

As a point of interest I had been involved in trying to save this aircraft from being broken up. 3 weeks before the storm approval was given for the aircraft to be handed over to the Bankstown Aviation Museum It's a pity.

It is the first book dedicated to a Viewmaster airline. This is bigger than "Electra Flying" and comes in two types Soft Cover NZ$39.95. Hard Cover NZ$49.95. Postage is additional but with a very cheap NZ dollar it is great value for money. Order from Richard: definedesign@clear.net.nz Have a look at the "Electra Flying" site first.

Air Canada still owns and operates the electra in the summer months. The aircrfat now flys only in support of sick and underprivelidged children. All associated participants are volonteers. See www.acfamily.org/tcc

Enjoyed the photographs and logs on the Neptunes primarily. I flew in a U. S. Naval Reserve squadron from 1963-1969 as an airborne ASW sensor operator. I flew many extra sorties sitting in for other positions just to get more flight time. I have fond memories of things I saw that only a very limited amount of people have ever seen. The worldwide travel was great.

Dear Ron,
As an ex Ansett Airport man I have enjoyed very much the photos and history of the L188's. It is great to see this very important part of the Australian Aviation history preserved in such a detailed manner.
I have been trying to find a contact/source of someone who can supply coloured photos of aircraft like the L188 in the various Ansett (and Ansett-ANA) colur schemes.
Could you help - I also noticed that Peter Gates was the source of many of your photos - is he in the business of supplying prints.
I would appreciate your advice.
Once again enjoy your Page very much - it brings back graet memories.

Very interested in the lockheed Altair, Lady Southern Cross
VH-USB. Smithy's aircraft. I am always interested in finding more information and photos about this unique aircraft. If I was filthy rich I think I would be prepared to make a replica of this beautiful and historical aircraft.
Since I am not rich I have restricted myself to doing some very detailed drawings of this aircraft. I am a draftsman by trade and I think I have done this aircraft justice in graphic form. If you think a detailed drawing might be useful to you give me a call.
Personally I think trying to find anything of the Lady Southern Cross is almost a hopeless cause. After all the aircraft was constructed mostly from timber and I doubt very little beside the engine may still be there after 66 years of salt water treatment. It would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. The actual crash site is unknown as the wheel discovered may well have drifted hundreds of kilometers.
Any money received for a search would be better
spent, I think, in possibly constructing a flying replica which could be an educational tool and a fitting memorial to
the legend called Smithy. This replica could find a happy home in the Australia museum Canberra.

I am trying to record the history of all the Neptunes built, the most difficult being the USN examples. Your site gives excellent information on the Australian examples. I was looking for the designer of Sydney Harbour Bridge when your site came up in my search. Remembering the planes from the war period, I was just ten when the war ended, I was keen to see something about them. A friend in Gatton was an aircraft identifer during the war and I have spent couple of interesting discussions with him about the difference in various versions of aircraft. I hope to see more of your site soon.

Curiously entertaining as I perused miscellaneous Lockheed
bits and pieces. My primary endeavour was for the aeroplane
commonly known as the LASA 60. Our Lockheed Flying Club in
the sixties had one for some time, and it was a unique ex-
perience to "battle the elements" with this machine!!

Super Constellation Flyers
Excellent and very useful site. Glad to have found a contact to other Connie friends. We just started our own project for bringing a Super Constellation, ex HI-583CT, now N105CF, to Switzerland from Santo Domingo. The Connie will be flown to day from Opa Locka to Avra Valley where she will join the MATS Connie for further restoration work before flying her to the new home at the EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg. We will certainly maintain a good contact with you. Best regards, Urs Läuppi

I have a particular love of the P2V7/SP2H Neptune, having worked on the type from 1967 to 1971 as a Radio Technician in the Royal Australian Air Force, before going on to P3B Orions. They were cramped and a dog to work on and made worse by being located in the tropical north of Australia. However, they grew on you.

hi there
I think the Constellation-stories about each airplane is absolutely great - nice pics too. If you need any more of VH-EAG (2), let me know.
happy new year

One of the best sites on the internet to learn about the wonderful aircraft produced by Lockheed. It covers it all, from the Model 5 Vega to the in-service P-3 Orion. Keep up the good work, Ron.
