LOCKHEED MARTIN F-35A LIGHTNING II

 

"Australia has committed to 72 F-35A aircraft for three operational squadrons at RAAF Base Williamtown and RAAF Base Tindal, and a training squadron at RAAF Base Williamtown. The first F-35A aircraft was accepted into Australian service in 2018, with the first arriving in country in December that year. The first F-35A squadron, No. 3 Squadron, will be operational in 2021. All 72 aircraft are expected to be fully operational by 2023. In the future, a fourth operational squadron will be considered for RAAF Base Amberley, for a total of 100 F-35A aircraft."

 Air Force News states that four aircraft (A35-051 to A35-054) were delivered between 30AUG22 and 02SEP22 to make a total of 54 in country. ADF imagery suggests that A35-053 and A35-054 were delivered on 08SEP22.

 A35-062 and 063 were delivered directly to Exercise Northern Edge 23 in Alaska in MAY23. It is speculated that A35-060 and 061 might have been included in this delivery. Lockheed Martin announced in MAR23 that they expect to deliver all 72 aircraft by the end of 2023.

When A35-001 and A35-002 returned to the United States on 8 March 2017 it was not the first time that a single-engined Lockheed aircraft had flown the Pacific from west to east. Lockheed Martin's Code One magazine tells the story.
