Taken from the wing surface when the long range tanks were fitted before the flight Australia USA". The inscription includes a signature thought to be that of A.H. Affleck, a contemporary of Smithy. Arthur Affleck joined the Civil Aviation Branch of the Australian Defence Department in 1936 as a Flying Inspector.
